Kelly and Jake celebrated their wedding Chicago-style at The Dawson in River West. This gem of a venue blends bold and moody industrial features with a subtle rustic ambience. This one-of-a-kind aesthetic lends itself to a variety of photo opportunities and an unforgettable wedding experience.
When asked what she was most excited about, Kelly responded: The photography. Since Kelly is a skilled makeup artist, this didn’t come as a complete surprise! She has an artistic eye, and it was such an honor to fill the role as their wedding photographer and take part in their big day.
Wedding Day at The Dawson Chicago
Despite a last-minute change of plans for their getting ready space, we were able to get stunning photos of Jake and Kelly leading up to the ceremony. We didn’t have the space (or the light) we were hoping for, but it didn’t throw us off! We just used it as an opportunity to get creative, and we were thrilled at the results.
These two were complete naturals in front of the camera; you’d think they were professionals! (Not to mention she rocked the most photogenic dress style that offered so much movement in photos!) Their confidence and openness to my ideas made for some incredible shots—from candid journalistic shots to bold, editorial portraits.
Kelly and Jake’s genuine personalities and dynamic chemistry overflows in every picture. It was special getting to capture things throughout the day that were meaningful to them as a couple.
Meaningful Details
Often, wedding details reflect pieces of the couple. A friend of Kelly recently launched a florist business and offered to design their arrangements, which made them even more special to photograph! And, Jake is a foodie at heart, so you can bet I included some boss pictures of The Dawson’s artfully-plated craft food.

I had a blast with this entire crew, and there was never a dull moment. As a grand finale, Mother Nature sent them off with some good-luck rain on their wedding day—but thankfully it held off until the end. Cheers, Kelly and Jake!

One thing I love about Chicago is how easy it is to find “hidden” gems and nooks to create epic photos. They’re everywhere if you know where to look. Sometimes magic is found in the ordinary (like an orange roll-up garage door.) We were able to capture so many phenomenal shots just walking around the neighborhood.
About the Venue
The Dawson is another Chicago treasure. Surprisingly, I had never been to the venue, but was impressed by the beautiful and romantic aesthetic. Their carefully curated style is a photographer’s dream.
Plus, the Dawson has such a rich history to match its striking features. The location of The Dawson was originally in a group of buildings owned by the Dawson brothers. The brothers, William and Henry Dawson, owned a major fireplace mantle company in the early 1900s. It has since been transformed to an award-winning restaurant, bar, and venue. From the remarkable grand staircase in the foyer to the intricate tile and handcrafted woodwork, The Dawson is full of impressive architectural features, both big and small, that photograph beautifully.
Based on your guest list, you can customize the space you utilize in the venue. The Dawson offers a stunning courtyard and multiple options for indoor cocktail hour, meals, and receptions. You have the option to reserve the entire venue or designated spaces. Booking the full venue gives you a capacity of 220 guests.
